"Pride and Prejudice and Zombies"

I wanted keep with my mission of writing about products that I do not own myself, but for my third and final blog entry I also wanted to write about something that is very dear to my heart… Zombies. So without further ado, I give “Pride and Prejudice and Zombies” by Jane Austen, adapted by Seth Grahame-Smith.

This book can be bought anywhere were books are sold: Borders(.com), Barnes & Noble(.com), Amazon.com, and I’ve even seen it at the Matador Book Store.

The retail price for the book is $12.95 in the U.S. but you can almost certainly get if for less, around maybe $9 if you buy it online. But, of course, if you buy online then you’d have to pay for shipping.

This may seem like the most random thing in the world to post about, but of all the products I’ve posted I think this one has the most interesting gender and sexuality message built into it. I first came into contact with this book when I visited my brother and sister-in-law. Now there are two things that you need to know about my brother and sis-in-law. 1) my sister-in-law LOVES Jane Austen – I mean all the books, all the many versions of the movie, EVERYTHING – she just loves them. 2) that my brother very patiently, but slightly begrudgingly, put up with her love of these classics.
Got the idea?

Good. Okay, so along comes “Pride and Prejudice and Zombies” and these two had one copy which they took turns reading it!

I think would be interested in this book because while it is still the same basic story of the classic romance novel, this parody adds humor, which (apparently) makes it enjoyable to die-hard Jane Austen fans, and peeks the interest of even the most casual or “manly” reader. Pure Genius.

** For those that are interested in some extra reading, here are the other unique and quirky titles by Mr. Seth Grahame-Smith:
“The Spider-Man Handbook: The Ultimate Training Manual Quirk Books”
“How to Survive a Horror Movie: All the Skills to Dodge the Kills”
“Pardon My President: Fold-and-Mail Apologies for 8 Years of George W. Bush”
“The Big Book of Porn: A Penetrating Look at the World of Dirty Movies”

  1. My sixteen year old sister came home so excited after purchasing this book. I did not see what was the big fuzz. I thought my sister was weird for bringing this book with such strange cover. A zombie, classy woman? After reading your blog, I have considered to read the book, once my sister has finished reading it. Thanks for the insight of how gender messages are built in the book.

  2. My little brother has this book. I wish he'd actually read the orignal but, it's really a cute idea. I'm just waiting for him to finish it so have a crack at it.
