The New PS3

Many people wondered whether or not to purchase the PlayStation 3 when the original model was released back in November 2006. The main issue with the PS3 was that it was really expensive, especially compared to the other competing video game systems like the Xbox360 and Nintendo Wii. The price of the original PS3 model went from $500-$600 depending on the hard drive sizes of 20 or 60 GB. The price for the Xbox360 ranges from $250-$300, while the Wii has a standard price of $250 for years. Later there was a price cut for the PS3, reducing the price to $400-$500 for the 40 and 80 GB models. Today you can buy the 80 GB or 160 GB origal PS3 model for $400 and $500. Because of the overwhelming price difference from the PS3's price and its competitor's, the Wii and Xbox360 was a lot more successful in sales. However, on September 1, 2009, Sony released the new "slim" PS3 model for $300. The new model is smaller and has a 120 GB hard drive making it a much better upgrade than the very first model. Since its release, the new PS3 has had more success in sales compared to the other models. The new PS3 is said to have less noise and consumes less energy compared the orignal models. One small drawback of the slim model is that it doesn't have the backward compatibility like the older models that allows them to play PlayStation 2 games. However, it's still able to play Blu-Ray discs and regular DVDs. In the picture above, the original PS3 model is shown on the left side while the new, slim model is on the right.

  1. My boyfriend has the PS3 and I was surplice that it was so expensive. Now he only plays Blu-Ray on it he hardly uses it for the video games. So if you are going to buy it make sure you are going to use it, and don't buy it because it's the new thing out there.
