Great Lash Big Washable Mascara by Maybelline (Suzanne S.)

The product I report on is called Great Lash Big Washable Mascara by Maybelline-New York.

The product claims to have a "bigger brush for great big live-it up lashes!" This slogan is very upbeat and compelling to me. In these
times of economic crises, since I can't live big, at least my eye lashes can!
According to the ad on the Maybelline site, the product comes in black or brown, and is packaged in a long pink bottle with a light green cap, and with the word "Big" prominently featured on the bottle. The brush is interesting, too, in that its bristles are alternating green and pink fibers. The ad on the site features a green eye surrounded by pink (skin?), with eye lashes that stand out and clearly have been photoshopped to perfection. It's pretty clear that the green eye is supposed to resonate with the bottle cap, and the pink with the body of the bottle. The implication here is that if you have this mascara, then you have the beautiful, lush eye lashes that are featured in the photo.
The product is new and evidently not in many stores just yet. I couldn't actually find it in Walgreen's, CVS, and Duane Reade. websites. On my next trip to Target I will check if it is on the shelves. Other products in the series are easily found in all of these places. It was actually surprising to see just how many different types of mascaras are on the market. For such a simple product, there is so much choice!
My guess is that this product costs something between $5.29 and $7.00 for .43 oz. of mascara. My guess is based on the prices of other products in the Great Lash series, and other Maybelline mascaras.
I decided to report on this product because I've been thinking about the current beauty trend in eyelash cosmetics. It seems that accentuated eye lashes are "in". I wonder why and what this means culturally . Everything in American culture is "big," now eyelashes too. Maybe eyelashes have also been on my mind because of Brooke Shields' commercial for Latisse--a product that claims to make eyelashes grow. Can eye lashes grow? If so, at what pace? I never really gave this any thought. Maybe the interest in accentuating eyelashes is about a cultural preoccupation with time and with things keeping up with the blink-of-an-eye pace of our society? Get those lashes growing fast! Get Latisse!!
Great Lash Big mascara seems to be a product for women, and women who may have a particular strategy towards cosmetics buying. They see mascara as "basic" and would rather spend as little as possible on it while spending more on things like lipstick, eyeshadow, etc. I'm basing this theory on my observation that there a lot of different types of expensive mascaras that one could sink their money into if they wanted to. I wonder if many women have a real need for some of these products. I'm sure at some level somebody needs vibrating mascara, but I wonder who and why people buy this product. Did you know that mascara vibrates? Am I the last to know?! Maybelline's "New Pulse Perfection" is $11.99 and comes in "Very Black". The product's slogan is: "Now vibration does what no other hand can do". Is this product just about mascara? Anyway, I'm sure there's a market for it, but I'm thinking that less expensive, less whistles-and-bells mascara is just as popular (what do you think?).
Finally, I find it interesting that Maybelline's headquarters are located in NYC while its factories are based in Little Rock, Arkansas. I imagine that labor is cheaper in the South. I wonder who works in the factories (women? immigrants??), and if mascara that is consumed in the U.S. is mostly manufactured here or overseas. It turns out that mascara is a product that women use to make in their homes in the 1920s. Manufacturing it is now a highly scientific process. It think that's interesting too.

  1. The new IPod Nano from Apple (Michelle Lapid)

The new IPod Nano from Apple has recently gotten some new upgrades from prior generations. Starting at 8gb for about $148, this IPod lets its users record video conveniently with its built in camera, has a new tuner for the radio, records the number of steps taken with a new pedometer, and lets individuals become their own DJ’s with the help of iTunes. This sleek, ultra portable music player, with new vibrant colors, let’s people enjoy their music on the go and also lets people take videos of what they want to share with other people. The IPod Nano can be bought directly from Apple’s website, their retail store, or where other fine electronics are sold.

The Apple company, which originally started up in California, has revolutionized how technology is being perceived and manufactured today. Apple specializes in laptops, computers, software, the line of IPods and recently, the IPhone. In a generation where technology has taken precedence, Apple continues to manufacture different types of products in order to supply its consumers with the very best. Apple has continued to grow and develop to become a very strong company, compared to their modest start.

The reason why I choose this product is because having an IPod has become a necessity for everyone—walking around campus, I see the signature white headphones and a plethora of different color iPods in the hands of many students. It is interesting to observe people with their IPod’s and seeing them bob their heads to a particular song and even doing a little two step if the mood is right. Portable music has come a long way from where it first began; the invention of the radio, to the boom box, to the walkman, to the cd player and now to the mp3 players. IPod’s have become a staple— it’s the new fashion accessory that everyone must have. I believe that some people might be interested in this product because music has become a big part of our lives. Music seems to have a big impact in our moods and who we socialize with—a simple set of lyrics can bring us up on a bad day, remember an old flame, get us in the mood for dancing, etc. By having a music player that is portable and that offers more for its consumers to do, people will be spending lots of money to have their music with them. What I also want to look at, particularly with the advancement of this technology, is how solely we have become dependent on it. Enjoying music back in the day meant attending more concerts, buying albums, and having a stronger connection with the artists and the music. Now, with the advancement of the IPod’s many people are able to enjoy their music simply on their mp3 player without leaving their home. I wonder if people stop to think about if their reality is heavily dominated by technology and rarely any interaction with people. I believe that we as a society are suffering from a digital dilemma—that human interactions, with real people are being replaced with technology.

  3. Okay, this is a little hard, but can be done. Do we all have to create our own blog?

  4. I agree with how the ipod has become some sort of a fashion icon when it was originally designed for an easy way to carry your music with you. With all the new upgrades they come out with to reflect todays youth, maybe MTV should take a couple ideas from Apple.

  6. Starbucks – Coffee

Starbucks coffeehouse chains seem to be on every corner in every major city, and within the last few years, can now be found in our grocery stores. When I am in the public domain I have noticed those who are carrying a coffee or tea, chose to get it from a Starbucks. It seems, as people’s lives get busier so does their need to keep moving, and stay awake. The caffeine in coffee or tea gives that morning jolt or afternoon pick-me-up that’s needed to take on the day. Their drinks come in three sizes and are made to order anyway you want. This pick-me-up can range in price from a 1.20 to 6.00 depending on what kind of drink you prefer.

The Starbucks Coffee Company started selling their deliciousness in a single coffeehouse in Seattle Washington. They currently have over 16,000 locations spanning from US and Canada to Japan. Starbucks is about to unveil a new line of instant coffee. They are also working on putting out 2 new applications for the iPhone that will allow customers to order their drinks and pay for them by phone. Starbucks also offers setup’s that allow business to offer Starbucks in break rooms or at catered events.

The reason I choose Starbucks for this spotlight is because of its popularity with my peers. Starbucks is a very pricey way to get caffeine. If I were to buy a coffee from there daily I would be spending over $30.00 a week on a beverage. And those of us who have a caffeine addiction have to have coffee every day, not just Monday through Friday. Starbucks doesn’t even seem effected by all the new energy drinks on the market.
Energy drinks are a cheaper alternative to the expensive coffee habits we have developed.
Although, every time I pass a Starbucks there is always a long line in the drive thru. I wonder how people can afford this cost in our current economy? Is this proof we are an overindulgent society?

  10. Has anyone stopped and observed the students around us lately? It's interesting to watch people on their ipods and laptops living in their own little worlds. What happened to getting to know the people around you? Why is it, on the first day of any class, everyone sits alone, looking awkwardly and listening to their ipods? Since when did technology become a defense mechanism?

  12. UGG Boots By Allison Whalen

UGG Women’s classic boots come in about eight colors. There is also the short which is calf height or a tall that is almost knee high. The UGG classic features genuine twin face sheepskin. All classic boots have a soft foam insole that is also covered in sheepskin. The molded EVA light and flexible outsole is designed for refreshing comfort with every step. This is all according to the UGG website. The classic boot starts at $140.00. These boots are great for the cold weather. They are warm and comfortable for those snow days. But as many of us live in the city and valleys, there are not many of these. They will work for those raining days as well. Also because they are flat soled they can be harmful to your feet because they have no arch support.
UGGs in recent years have become a fashion statement. Many women are buying them for the look and not their function. Women will wear these boots that are made for cold weather with shorts and skirts when it is ninety plus degrees outside. This makes absolutely no sense to me. I understand they are comfortable but your feet are sweating. That’s just gross and can cause foot issues like fungus. No one wants that.
All in all these boots can be useful but are on the expensive side. But for those who spare nothing for fashion they are a must have. UGG also has a complete line of boots so there are many to choose from. You see all the styles at www.uggaustralia.com

  13. TRESemme Hairspary by Marianela Diaz

The product that I choose was TRESemmé Hairspray. It is a very common brand and many have used of have heard of TRESemme. I do not use hair spary but the reason I decided to write about this particular product because I wanted to understand or try to figure out for myself why women and some men use TRESemme hair spray. What really made me decide on this particular product was when I watched my mom use it one morning, I have always seen her use it every morning and when she gets out of her bath, but I did not really pay much attention to it. She has curly hair and I dont, maybe that's one of the reason why I dont use it. I do not like th way it makes my hair feel. But when I asked my mom why she used the hair spray, she said "It holds my hair still and gives it volume, it gets really frizzy if I dont use it. " Well the bottle does say "All day control" and "Humidity Resistance", with "Extra Hold" so maybe it does work.
According to Wikipedia, the product was manufactured by Godefroy Manufacturing Company in Saint Louise Missouri in 1947, so TRESemme's been around for a while. According to an article titled "Positioning: Tresemme Hair Line Goes Back To Its Roots", by Christine Bittar, the company has spent around 17 million on advertising for TRESemmé. So if you go to a hair salon or a beauty supply expect to see this product in their shelf, because this is America's #1 hairspray. Well that is what the back of the bottle says right after an asterisk*.

  14. Moshi Voice Control Alarm Clock: The future of Alarm Clocks

This is not just an ordinary talking clock, it is the world’s first listening clock that allows you to set the time and alarm by your voice alone. With the voice control feature, this new technology allows you to ask for the time while getting ready in the bathroom or lying in bed. You can even set the time and alarm without getting up and can even ask for the temperature without moving or looking at your clock. At Moshi, they believe that you should be able to control your electronics not the other way around. Thus, creating this new product the Moshi Voice Control Alarm Clock. You are in complete control by using your voice-activated commands. You can simply activate Moshi by saying, “Hello Moshi”, Moshi will then politely respond “Command Please” and then choose any of the 12 voice activated commands listed below.

Time = Tells you the current time.
Set Time = Set time by voice
Alarm = Tells you time alarm is set
Set Alarm = Set alarm by voice
Alarm Sound = Choose 1 of 3 available alarms
Turn off the Alarm = turns off the alarm, gives current date, time, and temperature
Sleep Sound = choose 1 of 3 available sounds
Play Sleep Sound= Plays 5 minutes of sleep sound
    Today’s Date = Tells you today’s Date
Temperature= Tells you current room temperature

The Moshi Alarm Clock is fully voice interactive and can be operated without even seeing the clock. It works so well that it is recognized by the World Blind Union and was awarded the Vision Free Award by the Stevie Wonder Foundation at the Consumer Electronics Show in 2009.

    Features:
    Voice activate
    Snooze
    3 alarm sounds
    3 sleep sounds

    Volume Control

    Specs:
    Classic Design
    Dimensions 7.5” x 3.25” x 4.5”
Power: AC/DC 3 AAA batteries for backup.
    Batteries not included.

I find this product very helpful to college students because this will make it easier for us to keep track of time. In the society that we live in, we struggle to keep up with time due to work, school and just life itself. Having a clock that you can control by your voice is very ideal with our fast paced lives. Imagine coming home late form work, you don't need to set your clock. All you have to do is talk to your clock using the commands and you can set your alarm, know what time and day it is and even the temperature while lying in bed or in the bathroom. This is really an innovation that can be really helpful and useful to college students with busy schedules and hectic lives. At a very affordable price this is more of a necessity than luxury.

  17. Mobigrip (Denise Paseman)

Let your phone hold you for a change! Mobigrip will protect your expensive and fragile toys from loss or accidental drops. This is marketed as a safety leash for high tech toys. The item is a circle with adhesive on one side and a mini bungee cord. Stick the gadget to the back of a cell phone or camera, and loop your finger through the cord to have a more secure grip on handheld devices.
Each Mobigrip retails from $7.95 to $9.95. The item comes in over a dozen colors and various prints, including animal and snake patterns. The circles may also be customized with pictures provided by customers, or with personalized text or company advertising.
You may also customize the jewel case packaging for the Mobigrip to match or complement the colors of your electronic items. The manufacturers note that they are made in the U.S.
Mobigrip plays upon fear of damaging or losing expensive gadgets. The text on the product website states that it’s almost like back up insurance for your items. There may be a warranty but I couldn’t find any information about one on the official site. I found no claims on the official site that would let consumers recover costs for an item that allegedly was damaged while attached to a Mobigrip. I speculate that it would be difficult to prove that accidents were the result of the item failing, and not user mishandling.
I read about this product in more than one article about new electronic items. It is not listed on major electronic retailer websites such as Fry’s or Best Buy. Buying from the manufacturer website would seem to be the best choice as far as availability and variety.
I don’t find any reason to criticize anyone who buys Mobigrip; the item is reasonably priced. I even believe that some people would remember to jam their finger into the bungee loop and hold their phone or camera more securely. I just dropped and broke my latest phone, and maybe if I had and used the Mobigrip I wouldn’t be shopping for a replacement phone. I have to wonder if I would consistently use the safety item. I suspect that I would in everyday life still juggle my phone between hands and shoulder while multitasking, and still risk dropping it. It ultimately seems like an item that might be useful, but like many things depends upon the owner to utilize reliably.
I decided to report on this accessory after noticing that it no longer seems to be enough to have basic no frills computers, phones, and cameras. Now we can buy brightly colored neoprene sleeves to protect our netbooks, decorative skins to cover our phones, and little
safety belts for our portable electronic toys. I guess that I am bemused at the ever expanding variety of accessories that are available. Some are merely decorative, and some might be useful, like the Mobigrip.
